The Sample book and AR app form an innovative dual format to dive into traditional Japanese papermaking. Based on a research trip to two craft workshops, they blend tactile, practical, and cultural insights—enriched by immersive audiovisual layers like tutorials and 360º videos.
Project partners:
Craft Portrait, Sekishu Washi Kubota, Nishita Washi Kobo, Sekishu Washi Kaikan, MONO Japan
How can traditional crafts inspire and evolve in a contemporary context?
“Washi Futurism” explores Sekishu Washi, a Japanese paper unique to Japan's Iwami area. Renowned for its long fibers and pure beauty, this material offers fascinating possibilities for design and architecture. During their 2023 field trip to visit Sekishu Washi paper artisans, the design duos Cream on Chrome and Craft Portrait grew aware of a deeper significance of the craft: By upholding production methods that date back over 1500 years, the family run workshops ‘Kubota’ and ‘Nishita’ have kept a balance with the natural and social environment.
“ We aimed for a hybrid experience: Readers encounter videos and sounds without losing touch with the physical pages.”
(Martina Huynh)
Ranging from 14 original paper samples to interactive videos—the publication appeals to a wide range of senses. Several pages of the book are recognized by a custom developed augmented reality (AR) application: When scanned, the paper samples e.g. reveal microscopic close-ups and modifications (e.g. water absorption). With such seamless transitions between physical and virtual media the book pioneers in the field of hybrid forms of publication.
Our research trip deeply shaped the book’s diverse content: We followed the paper manufacturing process from plant to sheet and documented applications in design and architecture alongside practical guides. Interviews with craftspeople have yielded thought-provoking testimonies on tradition, change, and craft ethics, as well as an essay about speculative washi futures. Conversations with kozo farmers and local creatives added insights into natural resources and the significance of craft practices in the region, offering a rich, multifaceted view of Sekishu Washi.
Book launches in three different countries and our corresponding exhibition at Nieuwe Instituut in Rotterdam created a strong momentum around our project. It allowed us to discuss the relevance of Sekishu Washi with people of diverse professions and cultures—a growing international network interested in regenerative artisanal practices. The publication seems to be well received by readers and creative professionals, as the limited edition of 300 copies is virtually sold out by now.
